Magnetic Bead Extractor Overview

The Magnetic Bead Extractor, VP 407AM-N1, was designed to transfer paramagnetic beads between source and destination microplates to simplify and speed the bead washing and elution process. This process improves magnetic bead assays such as Next Generation Sequencing sample preparation by eliminating the need for using plastic disposable pipet tips and eliminating the need for multiple tedious pipetting steps. Washing the magnetic beads is much faster and easier with the Magnetic Bead Extractor. The VP 407AM-N1 Extractor works by clipping a standard non-skirted PCR plate or “Cover Plate” over its 96 magnetic pins, the Cover Plate acts as a sterile barrier between the magnetic beads and the magnetic pins. When dipped into a source microplate containing magnetic beads in suspension, the beads are quickly attracted to the magnetic pins and tightly bound to the outside of the Cover Plate’s pointed wells. The large surface area and strong 52 MGO NdFeB magnetic pins ensure very fast bead extraction and minimal bead loss. Once bound to the outside of the Cover Plate, the beads can be easily washed by transferring from the source microplate to one or more wash plates or reservoirs filled with buffer.  The analyte captured by the magnetic beads can then be eluted by placing in a microplate with elution buffer in the wells. Alternatively, the beads can be released into a destination microplate by placing the VP 407AM-N1 with Cover Plate into the destination microplate and then ejecting the Cover Plate into a destination microplate using the stripper plate. The beads are then released into the liquid in the wells of the destination microplate, and the Cover Plate is removed leaving the magnetic beads behind.

Other brands might work as long as they have the following criteria:

• Flat top
• Full height (not low profile)
• No skirt
• Match the contour of the pin leaving a minimal gap between pin and plate
• Minimum length across the top of the plate of 119mm

• Corning/Costar 3797, 150 ul working volume
• VP 416S Square well plates, 400 ul working volume
• VP 416S-1 Square well plates, 700 ul working volume

A group of Scientists at the University of Victoria – Genome BC Proteomics Centre, has developed an assay using our Magnetic Bead Extractor in their assay system (Bead Extractor Assisted Reagent System) (BEARS) which takes advantage of the simplification and speed of washing the beads with our device. They published their results in Anal Chem 2017.
